Tiny pups, destined to be heroes

They're just five weeks old, and Honey is doing a fine job of raising her very first litter, Chip, Sugar and Mac.

This spring, the Soldan family, of Oakland Township, found out Honey, the Labrador Retriever, was pregnant.

"I was very excited, but I was also a little nervous," the mother of the Soldan family, Jennifer.

The Soldans had never cared for a pregnant dog before, but that's exactly what they signed up to do when they became her foster family back in January.

She adds, "As a family group, as a family unit, that's something to experience together, that's pretty amazing."

It's also very important.

Honey actually belongs to a company called Elite Detection K9, in Rochester Hills. The company breeds and trains, based on specific genetic characteristics, future bomb sniffing dogs. They do it all with a little help from families like the Soldans.
